Cheap New Construction Windows are not for Window Replacement
Selling cheap new construction windows as high-quality replacement windows
New Construction Windows sold as Replacements are Pigs with Lipstick
Don’t get me wrong, I like pigs as much as the next guy. I love bacon, ham, and pork ribs! However, let’s put fun aside about dressing up pigs while I tell you an important window story. We’ve recently seen local companies selling cheap new construction windows for your home as if they were high-quality replacements. In fact, I’ve talked with several folks who said they saw this as well. Frankly, these two window types are not the same so please read along and I’ll explain how and why.
Fact #1: new construction and replacement windows from one manufacturer are not the same
Why order a replacement window when you can buy a cheap new construction version from the same company? After all, if they’re from the same source shouldn’t they be of the same quality and caliber? Or are there reasons why they’re different? The truth is they are different because large window manufacturers produce them for separate markets. Thus, cheap new construction windows are labeled as such and not as replacement grade, best-quality products.
Fact #2: salespeople sometimes misrepresent replacement windows vs new construction
The identity problem between new construction vs replacement windows has been exacerbated by local salespeople misrepresenting the windows they sell. They start by talking about the overall high-quality level of the manufacturers they work with. Then, after broadly promoting their great products, they present cheap new construction windows under the same quality, functionality, and reliability umbrella. This is overtly misleading.
Fact #3: new construction windows have cheap components & lesser warranties
Cheap, new construction windows are clearly labeled as such. That’s why they have inexpensive parts, thin vinyl, weak Low-E, reduced functionality and reliability, and a lesser warranty. We refer to them as “pigs with lipstick” even though we have nothing against pigs. Yes, they are indeed windows. And if lowest price is your only concern you may be tempted to gravitate toward them. Many people who do don’t realize they’re buying windows meant for cheap new construction building. They also may not understand that the lowest price windows are also the lowest quality ones.
Fact #4: buying on price alone could lead to replacing new construction windows with more of the same
We ask that you follow one key rule when considering home window replacement. Don’t throw out your cheap, drafty, inefficient new construction windows only to put in a different set of new construction windows! Especially if your preferred window manufacturer offers higher quality replacement-grade windows for just a little more. We think most people know and understand this. However, some still cover their eyes and “hope for the best” when choosing the lowest price and quality window. If you’re tempted to do so please first conduct a thorough window provider search and comparison online.
Tips to help you find a reputable window source online
We suggest that you pull 20 window company evaluations from Yelp, Angies’s List, BBB, or any other source you trust. If a company has 10 good reviews and 10 not-so-good ones, is it really the one you want for your home? We think a good local window manufacturing or franchise company should score at least 18 to 20 positive evaluations. And remember that although a company’s windows may look alike, they can be vastly different. Cheap new construction windows masquerading as high quality, energy-efficient windows are nothing more than pigs with lipstick. Although we like pigs as much as anyone else, when the lipstick comes off they’re still pigs! Oink! Oink!
