Part 2: The Real Costs of New Construction Windows
A nice, recently built home, but cheap new construction windows will reduce its energy efficiency
Why do Builders Only Offer New Construction Windows?
This post is part two of my article about new home building in Austin and central Texas. In Part 1: New Construction Windows, I discussed new construction windows in residential home building. One of the important things I called out is that most builders offer cheap, new construction windows without upgrade options. Why would they do that? From our experience it’s due to their lack of regard for window quality or energy efficiency. As a manufacturer we talk to builders all the time about their window needs. When we do the first question builders, remodelers, and building supply companies ask is “what do your vinyl windows cost?” Often, this comes with no inquiry whatsoever about window quality or energy efficiency.
What are the Real Costs of New Construction Windows?
Most folks we meet with about vinyl replacement windows are completely fed-up with their inefficient, new construction windows. They often complain about broken spring and lock mechanisms, fogginess, mold, leaks, sagging glass, and windows that don’t open properly. Some homeowners start by just replacing the glass. However, soon a domino effect occurs as other windows fail, and they must begin the entire process again! In addition to these problems, even if clients have relatively new homes their utility bills are high. However, the most important feedback we get is that their beautiful home doesn’t feel comfortable in very hot or cold months! Most people in these situations know they should replace their new construction windows to lower utility costs and gain comfort. But they find it hard to believe that their gorgeous home was built with such crummy windows in the first place.
Your Home Should be both Comfortable & Quiet
What’s the comfort level in every room of your house? Are some too hot during summer or colder than they should be in the winter? Can you feel heat pouring in on 100 degree days, even in September, or cold leaking through when temperatures drop? How about the sound level coming in from the outside? Does it sometimes feel like your neighbors are moving in? Or do you hear too much car traffic as Austin growth explodes? The truth is windows shouldn’t leak or fog and you should be comfortable in every room of your house without high utility bills. So, we encourage you to get educated and be an astute buyer before purchasing vinyl replacement windows or building a home.
Questions Homeowners Should Ask About Windows
1. If I’m building or remodeling a home what are my concerns about the quality of the windows?
2. Do I see any of the failures mentioned with new construction windows?
3. Is the comfort level in my home in need of improvement?
4. What costs am I experiencing right now with the new construction windows in my home?
