Casement Window Installation Without Nail Fins

by Nov 3, 2014

What are Casement Windows?

Often called “crank-outs” or picture windows that open, Ringer Windows’ elegant casement windows provide unhindered views with operability. They have elegant 3 ¼” deep frames and come in both white and almondCasements have an edge-hinged swing system allowing them to open like a door. They’re often used in bedrooms where exit safety egress is required for code compliance. At Ringer, we offer casements in three standard sizes but they can also be ordered with custom dimensions. Lastly, all our windows are made with super energy efficient Low-E double pane glass.

What are Nail Fins?

Nail fins are one inch wide vinyl flaps around the perimeter of a window or sliding patio door frame. They’re often used to secure windows or doors to the frames of wall openings as shown below. The extruded vinyl frames in our casement and awning windows do not have nail flanges or fins.

Why are Replacement Windows Installed Without Nail Fins?

Unlike new construction window installation, most replacement windows are put in without nail fins. This is because the brick or stone siding on many Austin homes is permanent and expensive to remove and replace. Thus, with siding blocking access to the wood framing, window nail flanges are unnecessary and often removed prior to installation. The result is a clean installation by sliding the window into a prepared opening and securing it in place. As mentioned earlier, Ringer casement windows are actually manufactured without nail fins for easy replacement application.

Follow Our Installation Guidelines for Casement Windows

When installing casement windows, we recommend following the Ringer Windows Installation Guidelines for Replacement Window Applications. We do this because field conditions vary widely during casement window installation and all responsibility rests with the person doing the job. It’s also important to ensure that you’ve purchased the correct type and size window for your opening. And that you’re following all national building codes and safety laws. In addition, be sure you have the correct tools and safety equipment for casement windows installation. Lastly, helpful items can be purchased from us including Vyn-L-Hold Screws, touch-up paint, and window accessory trim kits.

Casement Window Installation Placement & Fasteners

When placing a casement window in its opening ensure that it rests on a flat, fully supported surface. Do not use shims or the window may not be properly held up. Vinyl casement window installation also requires secure placement in the rough opening with Vyn-L-Hold screws. We recommend placing screws along the left and right side of the window. However, fasteners should NEVER be installed in the sash tracks of windows. In addition,  we suggest using no fewer than four fasteners to secure a window in place. And never overtighten fasteners during casement window installation. Vinyl window accessory trims may be purchased but are for aesthetic rather than structural purposes only. They provide a finished look up to the edge of masonry or drywall. Finally, it’s critical to ensure that all openings are sealed to their edges using an approved, proper method.
