NEW! I-89 LOW-E GLASS DOUBLE PANE WINDOWS

by Oct 3, 2014

New i-89 low-e Glass will combat winter!

GET READY – WINTER IS COMING!

Get Ready, the cold weather of Texas is upon us! The winter of 2013/2014 came as a surprise to many Central Texans. The colder weather started earlier than normal and lasted longer than expected. When the cold northern wind starts blowing in our southern parts, Ringer Windows is ready with our new i-89 Low-e Double Pane Glass Windows!

NEW! LOE I-89 LOW-E GLASS DOUBLE PANE WINDOWS

The new i-89 low-e glass starts with the Low-e 366 spectrally smart glass from Cardinal. (Ringer Windows 366 low-e glass windows have an average 0.22 SHGC and a U-Factor = 0.3). The new i-89 low-e glass then adds a slightly reflective Indium coating to the inside-your-home glass surface. This reflects radiant heat from your furnace back into your home to reduce the U-Factor to 0.2!

WHY I-89 LOW-E GLASS?

Last winter’s cooler than normal winter brought out many folks requesting triple pane windows. I learned a thing or two about triple pane windows being one of the newbies to the window industry. The first thing I learned is that most everyone from the north who owns a home knows that for a great energy you need to have triple pane windows if you live in northern states (North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Maine to New York). My five year home ownership in upstate New York didn’t include triple pane windows. We made due with storm windows and plastic wrap to help keep out the wind. After 21 years in Texas, I thought I was doing well without the plastic wrap. The second thing I learned is Texans don’t like the cold north wind. The third thing I learned is that triple pane windows are a bit of an overkill for Central Texas. And the last most important think I learned is triple pane windows don’t do anything to improve the summer efficiency of windows especially for Central Texas. Triple Pane windows improve only the U-Factor or insulating value for windows. It does nothing for improving the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), the thermal value for the effectiveness of the heat gain (how well your low-e works in reducing the UV/IR energy). Although U-Factor is very important in window performance (that is why we have argon in all Ringer Windows), the SHGC is the value that determines the thermal effectiveness during warm, hot, and hottest months. My energy bills are the highest during the summer due to the A/C running to cool the home. The A/C runs 8 months here in Central Texas. The furnace runs generally 2 months.

Double Pane Energy efficient windows for the Austin, Texas area should include an outstanding low-e glass such as the LoE 366 or LoE i-89 for lower SHGC for summer efficiency. For U-Values less than 0.3 to match triple pane thermal ratings, the LoE i-89 is the outstanding solution for double pane glass

ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND OPERATION OF ALMOND CASEMENT WINDOWS

The energy efficiency of the almond casement windows will be the same as the white casement windows. The average SHGC is 0.22 and the U-Factor is 0.3 with the low-e 366 glass. A great low-E glass window will provide you with years of outstanding operation. Ringer Windows casement windows use robust dual operating arm hardware to provide maximum support of the double pane low-e glass in sizes up to 40″ x 72″. Awning sizes are up to 48″ x 24″.

EXPECTED PRODUCTION OF ALMOND CASEMENT WINDOWS

Expected Production for Almond Casement Windows will begin October 26, 2014.

windows.

HOW LOE I-89 LOW-E GLASS WORKS

Double Pane Window Glass has four glass surfaces. Surface 1 is the the side exposed to the outside elements. Surface 2 is hermetically sealed inside the double pane window. This is the surface that has the low-e coating (low-e 366, or 270). Surface 3 is the inside surface of the glass 2 of the double pane window. And Surface 4 is the outside glass surface that is inside your home. This glass surface is the surface that has the etched privacy glass coating for obscure glass, or RAIN glass or SATIN. It is also the surface that adds the reflective permanent Indium layer that reflects radiant heat back into the home. The LoE i-89 may not be used with privacy glass.

So, fellow Central Texans. Here is what I recommend for winter in Central Texas.
1. Read my blog about triple pane windows. It goes through some math and is a very detailed discussion about triple pane windows.
2. Talk to the experts at Ringer Windows about the new i-89 Low-E glass. The loE i-89 Low-E glass is an outstanding energy efficient double pane glass with the winter thermal efficiency performance of triple pane glass. It doesn’t have the extra cost, weight, and bulk of triple pane windows. The loE i-89 Low-E glass has an outstanding SHGC (because of the 366 Low-E layers),Its improved U-Factor is due to the Indium reflective layer in the inside surface of your home to reflect the heat from your furnace back into your home.
