CHEAP NEW CONSTRUCTION WINDOWS ARE NOT REPLACEMENT WINDOWS
SELLING CHEAP NEW CONSTRUCTION WINDOWS AS HIGH QUALITY REPLACEMENT WINDOWS
A Pig With Lipstick
Don’t get me wrong, I like pigs as much as the next guy. I love bacon, ham, and pork ribs!
All funning aside, we’ve recently run into a couple of window companies selling cheap new construction windows and representing them as high-quality replacement windows. I’ve talked with several folks telling me the same story.
“Why use a replacement window when a cheap new construction window version, by the same company, is available? After all, if it’s from the same company, shouldn’t it be the same quality and caliber of window?”
Several of the larger and well-respected window manufacturers recently started making cheap new construction windows because they want to compete in a particular market segment. To be totally honest, these manufacturers clearly label their windows as new-construction and NOT replacement grade quality.
Several local window sales people have seized upon the strategy to talk about the overall high-quality levels of the window manufacturers they represent. After selling the virtues of the high-quality products of their representative companies, they then promote the cheap new construction windows under the guise that it’s same level of quality, functionality, and reliability.
These types of cheap windows are clearly labeled as “new construction”. They contain cheaper parts, thinner vinyl, weaker Low-E, and much less functionality and reliability, along with a lesser warranty. Although we have nothing against pigs, we refer to these types of windows as “pigs with lipstick”. Yes, they are indeed windows. But, if the lowest price is your only concern, it may be tempting to gravitate towards these types of windows and before you know it you are buying new windows that are meant for cheap new construction building. These lowest price windows are also lower quality windows.
Therefore, consider one thing when thinking about replacement windows. If you’re considering replacing your cheap, drafty, and inefficient new construction windows with different new construction windows, why do it at all, especially if your preferred window manufacturer offers a higher quality replacement-grade window (for just a little bit more)?
Most people know and understand the equity of value with a better product. However, many still cover their eyes and “hope for the best” when they choose the lowest price and lowest quality window. For those who are tempted, but haven’t yet pulled the trigger to go with the cheapest price and quality levels, we encourage you to perform a deep Internet search/comparison about your window providers.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK WHEN SEARCHING FOR REPLACEMENT WINDOWS
Pull 20 evaluations from Yelp, Angies’s List, BBB, or any source you trust. If the company you’re considering has 10 good reviews and 10 not-so-good reviews, is this really the one you want for your home? A good local window manufacturing company or franchise company with great windows will score 18 to 20 positive evaluations.
Although windows may look alike, they are vastly different. Cheap new construction windows masquerading as high quality, energy efficient windows are nothing more than pigs with lipstick. Although we like pigs as much as the next guy, when the lipstick is removed, it’s still a pig! Oink! Oink!
