Measuring Replacement Windows – Tips for DIYers

by Nov 11, 2019

Measuring replacement windows accurately is the first step in a successful window replacement project. There is more to the task than most DIY remodelers realize.

As a window manufacturer, we make and sell both custom and standard stock-sized vinyl windows. We sell directly to the public and building professionals. DIY Homeowners often ask our advice on how to “best measure for their custom-sized replacement windows”. At best, this is an extremely difficult question to answer because there are so many different factors. Depending on the experience level of our DIY clients, we usually guide them with three key points. In reality, there are more than three, but these tend to be the most important where replacement windows are concerned.

Three Considerations for Accurately Measuring Replacement Windows

  1. What installation technique does the DIY Remodeler intend to use? There is more than one method for removing and replacing a window. The desired technique will determine the size of the window and possibly some of the optional accessory trims that will be required. Our guidance is often tailored to fit whwe think a particular client can handle.
  2. What type and series of window does the DIY Remodeler want to use? Every window system is different, with its own geometry, installation requirements, and trim-out packages. It matters, so we spend time talking about what kind of window the client wants.
  3. What is construction of the existing window opening and how will the DIY Remodeler account for the irregularities? After a home is built, the opening sizes of the existing window spaces are always a bit different from window to window. Understanding all the dynamics of new windows and irregularities in these openings is crucial. Similar with what installation technique is used, we temper our advice based on the type of construction that our DIY clients have in their homes.

The added pressure of giving good DIY advice for measuring replacement windows is very real for us here at Ringer Windows. We know that most of our DIY clients are putting their faith, trust, AND hard-earned dollars into Ringer Windows based in large part on our advice and counsel.

The truth is, it’s impossible to completely explain how to properly measure for DIY replacement windows. All of our DIY advice is tempered with many suggestions to double check everything twice and if possible, enlist the help of a friend or remodeling/window professional who knows more about replacement windows than the DIY client.

In some cases, we simply and honestly do our best to discourage some DIY clients from following through because we know they are in, “over their heads.”

The Windows Measuring Service by Ringer Windows

We offer a service for measuring replacement windows—whether you decide ultimately to purchase from us or not. For $15 to $25 per window, we will send our Installation Manager to your home for a quick consultation and expert measurement of each window and/or door opening.

The cost depends on complexity and distance of a particular job. This service includes face-to-face time with our Installation Manager, and we provide our clients a list of each window opening size recommendation as well as a complete estimate for the window(s) AND/OR required trim kits to complete the task. The client is under no obligation to purchase our windows but they are required to pay the fee at the time of measure.

Regardless of whether or not a DIY Window Client purchases a little help with face-to-face expert advice, we’ll always try to help as best we can. In truth, we help all our DIY Clients with service and advice after the sale whenever we can. It’s part of our corporate culture to make good windows and help our clients with good advice, whenever possible. There are no other places quite like Ringer Windows when you consider all that we offer as a Texas based direct-sale window company.
