OPTION – Security Glazing
For Clients looking for added security measures for their homes, security windows may be the perfect option. Security windows are made with Laminated glass. Laminated Glass is very durable and very tough! Laminated is used in coastal settings where hurricane resistance is required. For residential settings, laminated glass is highly effective at meeting most security window needs for our clients. There are higher levels of security glazing with blast and bullet proof glazing but we don’t make these types of highly custom & costly security windows.
Laminated Glass in Security Windows
Ordinary annealed glass breaks easily. Tempered glass, while stronger, shatters under a greater impact. For those seeking additional security measures for their homes, laminated security glass may be a great window option. Sometimes referred to as “Lami Glass”, our laminated glass is very durable and tough, and in most cases, an excellent option for most normal residential security windows. Laminated glass is comprised of 2 pieces of glass, joined by an internal layer of PVB (Polyvinyl Butyral). If laminated glass is broken, the vinyl interlayer remains in the frame. The glass fragments stick to the interlayer. This provides a strong barrier against forced entry. The glass cannot be cut from one side only, which renders glasscutters useless.
Making Laminated Glass
The process of making laminated glass involves several extra steps of processing with high heat and high pressure in a machine called a Conclave. Once the laminated glass is made, the PVB interlayer adds tremendous strength and superior sound-stopping capability. Laminated glass is commonly found in high-rise buildings, hotels next to airports, and hospital settings. The PVB interlayer is clear and undetectable to the naked eye.
Laminated Windows meet Hurricane Codes
Laminated Windows are commonly used in coastal settings where hurricane resistance is both needed and required by code. The basic type of Lami Glass that we offer at Ringer Windows is strong enough to withstand multiple impacts from objects like baseball bats. This is certainly enough to deter potential intruders. We are very careful to “not oversell” our windows as “stop everything” type “security windows”. The truth is, some of our clients upgrade to laminated glass for the sound control and others buy it for security. Whatever the reason, security windows or sound-control windows, both qualities are present with this option.
